Saint-Germain-de-Calberte is a small, but lively, village on the Mediterranean side of the Cévennes and enjoys more than 250 days of sunshine per year. The weather is lovely in the summer, never too hot as Saint-Germain lies at an altitude of more than 500 meters. The scenery is beautiful as the village is surrounded by steep sided hills, valleys, rivers and streams.
The village has 400 inhabitants who don't speak much English, so there will be plenty of opportunities to practice your French.
The village boasts a few very good shops. You can find a baker and two “épiceries”. At Chez Yo-Yo you can buy newspapers, books on the region , postcards , etc … There is also a post office with a cash machine, a nice little cafe/restaurant and a lovely shop called “Atelier des Mines” where you can not only buy fresh local products and crafts but also check your e-mails .
There is a 12th century church, a protestant temple and a medieval castle nearby (“Chateau de Calberte”. For more details about the village and its history, visit www.cevennes.com (Calbertix).
Saint-Germain-de-Calberte is located in the department of Lozère ( no 48 ), in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, in Southern France. It is situated 100 kms north of Montpellier right in the middle of the Cévennes National Park.
